 Hibiscus

I have had a long standing love affair with hibiscus, it stems from my visits to the Caribbean when I was a teenager, I just loved the blooms and would constantly wander around with one tucked behind my ear and wanted to grow them from then on. Of course here in NC we have two types the "hardy" hibiscus (also called mallow) which have huge blooms the size of dinner plates, then there are the non-hardy types, smaller more delicate blooms more reminiscent of the caribbean blooms. I have both types (of course seeing as they were both on the dead plant section at Lowes). Here is the "non hardy" taken with a back board and not the best conditions.

Here is the hardy version, as you can see the flower is almost five times the size of the non-hardy version, but it is spectacular.

Are they not beautiful, I defy anyone to look at them and not drool.

 Two Weeks!

It has been two weeks since I have posted to my blog. (Thanks for reminding me of that Elizabeth :)) It is not that nothing has been going on in my garden it is just that I have been so busy doing other things (it is half time show writing season, forgive me.) As it is my garden is blooming right now, and I mean blooming fit to burst. While my asiatic lilies are done, my Oriential lilies are now in bloom. The scent of these babies is just absolutely incredible, while they grow at the living room window I can smell them as soon as I pull into the driveway. This is "Casa Blanca" why they would name an Oriental Lily after a town in Morocco is beyond me but there you go.

Ms. Peaches had quite an adventure this weekend. She was outside with me while I was taking pictures of the Oriental lilies and at one point she was sat on the lawn trying to decide what she would get up to next a) climb my legs, b) torment Nelson who was asleep on the lawn, c) stalk the birds on the feeders or d) try something different.

After a while she decided that she was going to go "climbing trees and judging distance" as my old Daddy used to say.....

After a while she was too high to get down, and scooting down backwards was no long an option. At one point she noticed the roof, which was right next to the branch of the tree where she had found herself.....

At this point she realized that whereas she was on the roof, she was also on the roof where a) she had never been before, b) she had no idea how she was going to get down from and c) it was very high.... Anyone who has ever spent time with a kitten will know the result of the story, she eventually figured out getting down by scrambling down the wisteria. At which point she licked her butt, preened her face and pretended that whoever was stuck on the roof it CERTAINTLY wasn't her.
